Whoopie pies were first created in Pennsylvania Dutch Amish Country. Some people believe there is only one chocolate whoopie pie recipe. However, if you visit Amish country during their Fall Whoopie Pie Festival, you will find over 100 varieties! This Pumpkin Whoopie Pie recipe is one of the more popular flavors.

Whoopie Pie Trivia:  Amish wives created whoopie pies using leftover cake batter and frosting. They put them in their husband’s lunch boxes. When these men ate the pie, they exclaimed “Whoopie! And, this treat received its name. 

Pumpkin Whoopie Pie Ingredients

Pumpkin Whoopie Pies Cake Ingredients:

  • 2 cups pumpkin, cooked or puree
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 cups flour

  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 teaspoons flour
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable shortening
  • 1 pound 10x sugar

How to Make Pumpkin Whoopie Pie Recipe Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.
  2. Mix together dry cake ingredients in a mixing bowl, and set aside.
  3. In a second mixing bowl, mix together cooked pumpkin, egg yolks, and vegetable oil.
  4. Add dry ingredients, and mix until the batter is smooth.
  5. Grease a cookie sheet, or use a non-stick cookie sheet.
  6. Drop a heaping Tablespoon of cake batter onto the cookie sheet, and spread the batter out to make a 3 1/2 to 4-inch cookie.
  7. Repeat the process, leaving about 2 inches between cookies.
  8. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes.
  9. While the cookie is baking, prepare the filling.
  10. Beat egg whites until stiff.
  11. Add vanilla, flour, and milk. Beat well.
  12. Add shortening and sugar. The more you beat, the fluffier it gets.
  13. Remove cookies from the oven and allow them to completely cool.
  14. Take one cookie and place a very generous amount of filling on top.
  15. Top with a second cookie.
  16. Repeat the process for remaining cookies.
